Work -Life Balance Myth

If you were told to choose amongst work, family, friends and health which two would you drop? Tough one, actually it is nearly impossible if you see it this way yet, we constantly are neglecting one, two or even three from that list.

Balance is a pretty subjective thing as everyone has varying priorities. It is also possible that you will feel out of balance without being able to place your finger on the issue. Let me first say that it is not your fault, we are living in a society today that glorifies busyness as a sign of importance and views being well rested as a sign of laziness. We look at being busy as something that happens to us which is far from the truth because we have the ability to choose and create the life, we want for ourselves.

The easiest way of getting out of this dilemma is to measure yourself using a work-life balance wheel. This will give you a clearer picture of where you are thriving and where you feel imbalanced.

The work balance wheel is an easy and upfront way to help you see a clear picture of where you are quickly.

Now that you have more clarity, ask yourself;

  • Why are some areas of my life scoring more highly than others?
  • Where would I like to put more or less energy?
  • What I am prepared to do to get the life I want?
  • What are the consequences if I do not achieve a sense of balance in this area?

Gentle reminders,

  • Work is apart of life, you are not dead while working therefore, work-life balance really is a myth.
  • Life is happening right now, therefore you should concentrate on the present moment and not be lost in your mind.
  • Plan for things that are in your control, those are the true essential things.
  • life is not an emergency.
  • Being invited is not reason enough to show up, ask yourself it is what is the most important task at hand.
  • Have a personal definition of success.

If you think this could benefit a friend, help them attain balance in their lives by sharing with them this blog post.
